When Val Pigott of Stonehouse Studio in Bobcaygeon needed a new business card, word on the street told her to visit Spitting Images. Val is an artist in Bobcaygeon who needed the design of her new cards to reflect the flair of her studio. A heavyweight textured card stock suited her style. The cards are designed with a dual purpose: the backs of the cards are left with open space to write prices or short personal messages to her clients.

The cards were designed to be a premium, instantly distinguishable business card. We chose an extra heavyweight 24pt thick uncoated card stock. This card is comparable to the weight of a coaster. The edges of the cards are painted red to top off the impressive stock.

The design picks up visual cues directly from the sign in front of the studio. We recreated the look of it down to the wood grain texture and the craftsmanship of the signmaker.

Client: Stonehouse Studio, Bobcaygeon
Designer: Kevin Foster
Specs: 24pt uncoated card stock. 4/4 Offset printed. Pantone Red painted edges
Designed with: Adobe Illustrator CS6, Adobe Photoshop CS6
Typefaces: Custom font redrawn from original hand-painted sign, Futura Condensed Medium.

Free Stock Images from Kozzi

Kozzi’s format has changed slightly. There are now many premium images that come up in searches. Many times, there’s more premium images than free ones, but there is still a good selection of quality free stock images to choose from. There’s also a new feature for artists and photographers to join and submit their own artwork for sale. If you’re interested in becoming a contributor, just create a free member account, and start uploading. The image library continues to grow and the quality appears to be getting better every day.

(Original Post:)
As a Graphic Designer, I often find myself needing to use stock images and illustrations to complete my designs. Going to iStock is always an attractive option – they have a huge library of quality images and their pricing is reasonable. Sometimes, however, either there isn’t an image that’s quite right, or it may be quicker and cheaper to create the artwork yourself. I recently came across a stock image website that might help fill the gap.

Creative Cloud and CS6 Initial Impressions

Creative Cloud & CS 6 Initial Impressions

Yesterday Spitting Images upgraded to Adobe Creative Cloud. This gives us access to all the latest software from Adobe’s Master collection for a reasonable monthly fee. Because we had a license of Photoshop Extended CS3 in studio, we we’re eligible for a discounted monthly rate based on a 1 year subscription to the product. For all the details on what’s included and pricing options or to purchase and save up to 40%, visit their website

In a small series of blogs I will share my initial impressions of the software, what I like about the update and what I miss about my previous version, Creative Suite Design Premium CS4.
